They Want My Money

Israel’s Broadcast Authority (Rashut Hashidur) got my address, finally.

After we got married, Elina changed our IDs to reflect the new civil status. On the way, she also updated the address. A month later, I receive a letter in my mailbox. It has my name and i.d. number on it, and it is delivered to the new address, which was given (only) to the ministry of interior a month before. “Dear mr. Peer,” it says, “In case you have a television in your home, please pay us […] 461NIS”.

So, on the first notice, they ask me - if I admit of having a television - to pay (within three weeks) the entire annual cost + 100NIS fee. Of course they don’t say that this is the case, but I checked how they arrived at this amount of money. They never asked for money before, and now they already want to fine me. Nice.
The other thing, of course, is that they weren’t supposed to have my address at all. Stealing it from the government is something normal citizens go to jail for.  It seems a habit of theirs: Elina accidentally told someone yesterday that she updated our details, and the immediate reaction was: “did you receive already the IBA bill?”. The one she was talking to did the same kind of update, and is receiving payment demands ever since - and that couple don’t even live in an appartment of their own.
