Hit The Road

Finding new lifters to join me proved to be easier than I thought - one day after arriving at Australia, I went to the road again, this time with three girls in the car: Hadas from Kfar-Saba, and Anne and Krista from the Netherlands.

I phoned Hadas after seeing an ad she hanged; she gladly joined. When we met, Anne was just standing there also looking for a lift; and the following morning, when I picked her up, Krista was with her and asked to also join. So right now the car is pretty full, and we are all happy and good.

We drove back to Townsville and left there the coastal area, into the Savannah: my first part of the famous australian outback. It is a long, endless, road. The land is mainly vast planes, which change from sparse eucaliptus forests into a dry savannah and than to dry hillsides. We spotted a few emus, and numerous dead kangaroos on the road - Hadas even hit one yesterday while she was driving the car, and broke my bumper (I still haven’t decided if I should fix it, which will cost her some money). In general, Hadas doesn’t have much luck with driving - today she was caught by the police for speeding 10 km”h above the limit, and was fined 100$ (not that she plans to pay it. Her problem.)

We now arrived at the city of Mount-Isa. It is a mining center at the middle of nowhere, but they claim to have here copper, zinc, uranium, silver, and other minerals; the main thing I saw here is a small but nice fossil museum, which shows plenty of ancient bones (I even got a tour on their lab to see how they actually excavate the bones - pretty interesting, that tedious work of theirs). While I was in the museum the girls went shopping - I can’t wait to see what they will cook tonight - in the last two night they prepared excellent dinners.
